The Arkansas EnergyCorps held an Eco Celebration at Maple Manor Apartments in Fayetteville on April 29, 2012.
City of Fayetteville Arkansas EnergyCorps members Elizabeth Hill and Dan Dean led an afternoon full of fun to encourage residents to reduce, re-use, and recycle! Elizabeth and Dan created a flier for the event which management posted on apartment doors along with reminders on their Facebook page. Over 30 residents came out to learn more about the newly launched recycling program for apartments in the City of Fayetteville.
The Applied Sustainability Center at the University of Arkansas contributed GE compact fluorescent light bulbs and US Pizza donated ten pizzas and salad. Each resident that signed a pledge/reminder card to recycle and save energy received a light bulb and pizza.
EnergyCorps distributed a variety of free materials, including; “30 Simple things You Can Do to Save Energy and Money” books from the Arkansas Energy Office, canvas tote bags from Boston Mountain Solid Waste, and recycling brochures from Washington County Environmental Affairs. Walmart donated a $100 gift card that was used to purchase 10 gallon and 20 gallon containers for storing recyclables which residents could win by playing the re-used water bottle bowling game, which was the huge hit of the day! Other activities included re-used materials to decorate vases from jars, board games made out of pizza boxes and light switch covers to help remind you to turn off the lights. “Fayetteville Recycles” pencils and stickers were given as prizes for the “Ride your Bike” sandbag toss game. Recyclable materials for the “Recycling Relay Race” were donated from Washington County Environmental Affairs.
Energy Corps members Shannon Joyce, Sammi Jones, and Meredith Lewis assisted with the various activities and Energy Corps members Bill Dollar and Dan Dean provided live music. Twenty-eight residents signed the pledge with several children participating. Residents and management enjoyed the event, posting notes on the maple Manor Facebook page such as “Great afternoon!”, “Thanks guys!” and “Had a great time at the Eco-celebration!”
A fun time was had by all! EnergyCorps: we get things done!
