Energy Corps members joined with other AmeriCorps members across the country in honoring Dr. King’s legacy by performing a day of service on January 16th. In Pennsylvania, members from Wilkes-Barre joined with members from Philadelphia to host a day of home weatherization workshops at the Energy Coordinating Agency’s James L. and John S. Knight Green Jobs Training Center, located in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. Jordan Goldsmith reports that members Tina Tran, Matthew Dahlhausen, Kayleigh Cornell, King Adjei-Frimpong and Michael Maholtz started out the day by handing out flyers, printed in both English and Spanish, promoting the workshops.
In Montana, Todd Hunkler says members Kaleena Miller, Ryan Ayers, and Kiran Singh weatherized seven homes in Butte during the day of service. Individuals receiving assistance were all on the low-income energy assistance list.In other areas of the state, Nate Condron helped at a recycling drive in Helena; Kim Pekar volunteered at a healthy food drive in Helena; Martin Knight volunteered with a homeless project in Missoula, and Steven Eagle Feathers, Jay Ball, and Patty Morning helped with a renovation project at the old historic Havre post office.
Melissa Terry tells us that the Arkansas members rolled up their sleeves for some planting and clean-up at Hollow Hill Elementary School in Fayetteville. Joined by employees from Home Depot, the group planted a garden, cleared a trail and planted berry bushes. Another great day of honorable service from our members.
Finally our Iowa member Jordan Sheibel attended a weatherization event held by Iowa GreenCorps. Congratulation to all those making a difference on MLK Jr. Day of service!
